Our story

It all started 6 years ago when husband and wife duo Doug and Sarah started a crochet subscription box called Crochet Surprise. Sarah loved crocheting and was the creative one, while Doug was the techy one who loved building things.

During this time, we learnt a lot about the power of community and how a common passion can bring people together. We had a private Facebook group where members could connect with each other and share their creations. We both were personally involved in the group and also in customer service. And we got to see firsthand how much people loved being part of a community.

Then we added a members area to our website where members could access exclusive patterns and tutorials. This was a game changer for us as it added a lot of value to our subscription box.

Things we learnt

We also saw the power of a subscription box and how it could create a predictable revenue stream. However, the downside was that it took a lot of work to pack and ship boxes every month even though we were using a fulfillment center. We still had to come up with new patterns every month, organize the boxes, and make sure we could order enough stock for thousands of boxes. The profit margins were also very slim.

We also learnt about the power of exclusivity and how people love being part of something that not everyone can be a part of. People could only join our Facebook group and members area if they were a subscriber. They felt special. They felt like they were part of a community that was exclusive to them. It also meant the level of engagement was much higher because people valued the membership since they had to pay for it.

What if we could take the best parts of a subscription box and combine it with the best parts of a membership site? That's when the idea of Memberply was born.

Memberply is born

We wanted to make it easier for store owners to create an amazing community around their brand and add a recurring revenue stream to their store. And to be able to do this without having to create a whole new physical product every month like a subscription box. We wanted to make it easy for store owners to create a membership program that was easy to manage and that could scale. That's when we decided to build Memberply.

We then developed Memberply completely in-house. We wanted to make sure we had full control over the platform and could make changes quickly. We also wanted to make sure we could provide the best support possible.

So what does Memberply do?

Memberply is a Shopify app that allows you to create a paid membership program for your store. Members pay you a monthly or yearly fee and in return, you offer members only discounts and rewards. These rewards and discounts can include access to locked content, free shipping, member only discounts and the ability to earn points while you shop and then redeem those points for store credit.

These rewards and discounts are then automatically delivered through the members area on your store.

With Memberply, you are simply leveraging your existing products by offering rewards and discounts on them and combining it with the power of exclusivity and community, to create a membership program that your customers will love.
